The Web Design and Development Process

Studio Whitby Blog

If you’re thinking of working with us, rest assured at Studio Whitby we believe in making our web design projects as easy and as simple as possible for our clients. The work carried out is always made clear, there’s no hidden costs and we always keep you updated as the project progresses. While every project is different, I’ve outlined an average website design and development job below - from first contact to final upload so that you can get an idea of how we work.

Stage One
To start off, we will ask you to provide a design brief, over the phone, online or by calling into the Design Studio. Don’t worry if you don’t have many ideas, its just to get a general idea of what you require and allows us to get a better understanding of the work involved, enabling us to give you the most competitive quote. Click Here to see an example of the type of questions we might ask. If you are requesting a website re-design rather than a new site it would also be great if you could let us know your existing sites address and also what you feel could be improved.

Stage Two
Once you are happy with our quote and have agreed on the cost of the job, we will require a 30% deposit and any agreed content to be provided in a word or pages document. Supplied imagery should be sent as high res Jpeg or PNG files.

Stage Three
We will then begin the design process, which usually starts with a bare bones grid based layout of the pages and navigation of the site, this then naturally moves on to more evolved mock-ups until we have a static PDF file for each page or section. Once we have a design together we send across a proof file or invite you into the studio for an on-screen preview of the site where you can take away a copy of the design on a USB stick. This allows you time to fully look over the design and advise of any changes or amendments you might require. Depending on the size and scope of the project, the content supplied and our current work-load, stage three can take from 2-3 days to several weeks. Timescales and deadlines will usually be agreed beforehand and we keep you up-to date on how it’s coming along and the work we are doing.

Stage Four
The design can then be tweaked until you are completely happy. Because we have taken the time at the start of the project to get a full understanding of what is required - this stage rarely takes more than 2 or 3 amendments and often no changes at all!

Stage Five
Once the final design is agreed and signed off we will begin the coding of the site - this is what turns the static PDF designs into a functioning website displayed within a browser. We use the latest code - developed in house and unique to your design. Stage five usually takes 4-5 days but again, depends on the scope and complexity of the proposed design.

Stage Six
Once the design is replicated in code and the website finished we will upload to our dedicated UK based web servers and your site will be live on your chosen domain name. At this stage you will have an opportunity to make any further small amendments to the content or, if you have chosen to use our content management software - log in and update any content yourself. At this point we will require the remaining balance to be paid.

Stage Seven
Over the next few weeks we will submit your domain to the most popular search engines including google. This is a useful and free SEO package which comes with all our website projects and will help drive targeted traffic to your site. If your site includes a content management system we will also supply a welcome pack in the form of a PDF document which outlines the use of your new website, how to log in and edit content or register and use your Email account.

If you’re thinking about having a new website designed and developed and think we could work well together, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. The studio is open 9am until 5pm every weekday and you can book a meeting to come and see us by telephoning 01947 899120 or sending us an Email.
